Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is an autonomous body formed under the Registration of Societies Act XXI of 1860. It is run by an Executive Council (EC) headed by Hon’ble Minister of Defence as its President and Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal as its Vice President. JS (G) & Air from MOD and Principal Secretary Sports & Youth Govt. of West Bengal are two secretaries of the Institute. Representatives of various Ministries both from centre and state governments are the members of the Executive Council. A most experienced and competent officer from the defence forces is selected as the Principal. He is the administrative head of the Institute.

Present Team
The present Principal of HMI :
img-22 Col Neeraj Rana fourteenth Principal of the Institute, was commissioned into of the Armoured corps in 1989. He has also served as Vice Principal of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi for 3 years.

Colonel Rana is not only involved with mountaineering but specializes in Aero and Aqua Sports as well. He is a qualified instructor in Paragliding in Para Motors, He has also represented the Army in, Pre- world cup qualifiers in paragliding.He also is a ‘ Solo’ pilot in powered Microlight aircrafts. .In the field of Aqua Sports he is qualified in white water rafting.. As a mountain lover he has trekked almost every major destination in the Himalayas. He has also attended various seminar in mountaineering field in India and abroad. He was actively associated with “Mission Everest’’ and was also involved to give special training to Tajikistan Army persons in 2003 and Army Everest lady officers team in 2004-2005.

Colonel Rana was felicitated by National Geographic Channel for “Mission Everest” and awarded Chief of Army Staff Commendation card for his first ascent of Draupadi ka Danda. His other achievements, as leader on Search & Rescue operation in Garhwal Himalayas retrieving 06 members of a trekking team in 2003. Maiden Paragliding flight with 16 launches in 36 Sector Sumdo at 11,000ft and Kaza Spiti Valley at an altitude of 14000ft.
   
Instructors
Ang Norbu He is the Chief Instructor at HMI. Among his several successful climbs are Nanda Devi, Gya III Kamet, Abi Gami & Aconcagua (Argentina ). He was the member of HMI Everest Expedition
   
Sangay Sherpa He is the Senior Instructor. He was the climbing member of Mt Everest Expedition in 1992 & 2003 and reached upto South Col & North Col. Shi Sherpa also has been the climbing member of Kangchenjunga expeditions in 1991 and reached upto 27,00ft. He has successful climbed Mt Gya III, Mt. Kamet, Mt. Aconcagua ( Argentina ) He led and climbed the first successful IMF expedition to Mt. Ramjak.
   
Ang Tshering He is also a Senior Instrucrtor. Ang Tshering was appointed as an Instructor in 1999. Among his several successful climbs are Gya III, kamet, and Abi Gamin.
   
Hav Bhoop Singh Hav Bhoop Singh posted on deputation basis from the Indian Army (Kumaon Scouts ). Before joining at HMI he also served as an Instructor at HAWS and S.B.S School. Hav Singh participated in Winter National Skiing games in 1997 at Guimang and he climbed MT. Nun Kun, Mt. Machi, Mt panchachuli, Mt. Dunagiri, Mt. Nanda Devi. He has been awarded COAS.Commendation Card. He was a member of the successful Mt Makalu expedition 2009.
   
Kushang Sherpa Kushang is a five time Everester ( 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2003). He holds the world record for climbing Mt. Everest from all the three sides viz. North Ridge, SE ridge and the challenging Khanshung Face. He is the only Indian who has climbed Mt. Everest five Times. Kushang is a recipient of Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 2003. He summitted Mt Makalu in 2009.
   
Hav Devi Singh Hav Devi Singh is posted on deputation basis from the Indian Army. He has served as an Instructor at HAWS and S.B.S. He has successfully climbed Mt. Kabru North, He has also been awarded COAS Commendation Card.
   
Lakpa Norbu Lakpa Norbu was appointed as an Instructor in 1999.Among his several successful climbs are Saser Kangri- I, Kamet, Kokthang, Rathong, and Aconcagua ( Argentina )
   
Roshan Gahataraj Among his several successful climbs are- Gya III, Kamet, Abi gamin and Gorichen He was the Dy. Leader of IMF Bhurphudhura Exp. Roshan was the member of HMI Mt. Everest Expedition.
TK.Dey Tapadar Tushar has several expedition to his credit including successful climb to Mt CB- 13 Mt Gangstang, Mt Sudarshan, Mt Radhanath, He was the member of HMI Mount Everest Expedition 2003.Tushar has been awarded with the Governor’s medal in 1984.
   
Ngodup Bhutia Ngodup is an Instructor with HMI and has several expedition to his credit including successful climb to stok Kangri, Abi Gamin, Frey and kamet.
